Projects around Sandfields

Sandfields East & Aberavon Renewal Area
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council are about to embark on an ambitious programme of regeneration within the boundaries of Sandfields East & Aberavon and are calling upon residents of the area to be involved in the process which will have a positive effect on their communities for many years to come.

The Authority is about to declare the Boroughs first ever Renewal Area within these wards and is looking forward to working in partnership with local residents to ensure that the communities gain maximum benefit from this initiative.

The declaration of Renewal Area status will mean that improvements can be made to Housing, Social and Recreational facilities, Streets, Land, Community Buildings and much more by undertaking a wide range of initiatives including renovations & repairs, landscaping, environmental works and security measures. There will also be benefits for local people by providing employment, education and training opportunities.

Neil Firth, Neath Port Talbots newly appointed Renewal Area Manager is urging local residents to have their say on what changes they feel would benefit their areas:
Questionnaires have been sent to all local residents to gain their views on the areas in which they live and work and I would urge you to return the questionnaire as soon as possible urged Neil.
This is your chance to influence and change your community for the better. The Authority is committed to the success of the Renewal Area and to listening to the views of local people to achieve that success.
The Renewal Area can bring about positive change by preventing crime and reducing the fear of crime, improving living conditions, contributing to and encouraging economic development and by creating an attractive and safe environment in which people of all ages can live and prosper.

Neil has temporary office accommodation at present in the New Sandfields Building in Bevin Avenue pending a move to a permanent Renewal Area office and is available to provide help and advice on any issues concerning the Renewal Area. He can be contacted on 07967 990483 or by ringing the Civic Centre in Port Talbot on 01639 763333, CLICK HERE TO EMAIL RYLAND DOYLE FOR ANY FURTHER INFORMATION RELEATING TO THIS PROJECT. Back to top
Active Community Directory
Welcome to the Sandfields community directory!

This document has been produced by the Active Community Sub Group of the Sandfields Communities First Partnership. Its purpose is to provide information regarding activities taking place on the estate. As a group we felt that there were a lot of activities taking place within the estate which have little or no publicity and this booklet is an attempt to publicise the good work being carried out by many organisations within Sandfields. We hope that it will enable more people to participate in various activities.

The directory will be regularly updated, and if you wish to have your organisation included in the next edition then please contact one of the Communities first team on 01639 870067.

If you have an activity and want to be in the next directory let us now via phone on 01639 870067 or CLICK HERE TO EMAIL RYLAND FROM THE SANDFIELDS FIRST TEAM.

THIS DIRECTORY IS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD AT THE BOTTOM ON THIS PAGE AND WILL BE UPDATED ON A REGULAR BASIS. Back to top
Health and Well Being
RESULTING INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM HEALTH & WELL BEING WORKSHOP SESSIONS HELD AT BEVIN AVENUE ON MONDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2003.

It was decided on the 6th October 2003, in a meeting of the Health & Well Being sub group, that a workshop session be held at the Development Centre in Bevin Avenue on Monday 10th November 2003. This was to take the Health & Well Being theme forward to the next stage of the Terms of Reference, consulting with outside agencies. It was to be a brainstorming session with many agencies being invited to the event.

Excellent pictures of the work shop and its participants were taken by Layton Emery, the ICT Officer for Sandfields First and are included in the document, thus providing part of the resulting evidence from a very successful event.

Also included as part of the document are the Terms of Reference for the Health & Well-Being Theme. This theme is just one of the six themes that are currently being used to form the Action Plan of Communities First in Sandfields.

More Details and complete report are downloadable below in word format, if you would like to contact a Sandfields First Employee about Health & Well Being email SARAH MAINWARING. Back to top

STRIDES
This preview of a new Community project is the latest initiative developed jointly between New Sandfields Aberavon and Sandfields First in conjunction with the STRIDES Partnership.

The STRIDES project is based on the successful New Sandfields Unit 19 Training (Carpentry) Model of creating an informal *hands on* environment that enables the learners to increase their confidence to develop skills and enable them to gain self esteem and motivation.

This is achieved by simulating a workshop atmosphere normally associated with a *REAL* working environment, creating the opportunity to interact with fellow work colleagues. The model breaks down barriers that people have towards employment and further education, through the provision of work based skills such as :-

Improved communication techniques.
Higher numeracy and literacy skills.
Ability to follow instructions.
Team Working.

The project is a first stage progression route into further education, employment and work place initiatives.
STRIDES is aiming to provide facilities for people aged 16+ in Neath Port Talbot who may want to take the first step to progress into employment, further education or local work employment initiatives by using the workshop to engage into pre-vocational training opportunities. In other words it will be an easy access and soft entry point for anyone without qualifications regardless of current skill levels or basic skills needs.

STRIDES will also set out to address Childcare needs, by creating a crèche facility that will run sessional care in line with demand created by STRIDES.
This project will enable the STRIDES partnership to roll-out the Unit 19 Model into additional skills thereby offering a greater level of choice to the learner.

With STRIDES there will be more choice & opportunities to progress, to find out more visit the STRIDES website by CLIKING HERE or email MALCOLM EMERSON. Back to top
